Definition: What is conscious consumption?
It is a deliberate purchasing behaviour that prioritizes positive social, cultural, environmental, and economic impacts. It often aligns with the principles of the slow movement. Buy less but of higher quality; buy local, made from mono‑materials, and long‑lasting, etc. Use things until the end of their lifecycle.

8 aastat on möödas. Eight years since I last wrote here
Aeg-ajalt mulle meenub see kindablogi... Vaatan, et 2018.a tegin viimase postituse ja kolisin "kudumispäeviku" laadse tegevuse Facebooki lehele Kristi Jõeste Ulas. Ajad muutusid - oli paratamatu, et lihtsam ja kiirem moodus oli tegevusi kajastada somes, mitte enam "vanamoelises" blogis. Samuti olen paremaid palu postitanud enda isiklikule Instagrami kontole @kristijoeste.
Ühekordse värskendusena, võib-olla teen neid ülejäänud elu jooksul vahel veelgi, reklaamin, et "Eesti silmuskudumine 4. Sõrmkindad" on kaasautori ja toimetaja Anu Pingiga meil praegu aktiivselt töölaual ja väga suure tõenäosusega see käesoleval aastal ka ilmub! Pean tunnistama, et otsus paluda Anu selle raamatuseeria teekonda lõpetama oli parim üldse, sest üksi ma poleks seda iial suutnud valmis saada! Jagasime teemad/tehnikad omavahel nii, et tema kirjutab tehnoloogia osa (suures osas) ning eraldi vikeldamisest, pitskoest ja ühevärvilistest sõrmikutest ning minu hoole all on roositud, tikitud, narmalised ja kirjatud sõrmkindad. Praeguse seisuga olen mustandid kirjastusele üle andnud ning Anu vormistab neid sellisteks lehekülgedeks, nagu need raamatus välja hakkavad nägema. Muidugimõista tähendab see aktiivset, pea igapäevast dialoogi ja temapoolseid päringuid ja märkusi, kui olen millegagi puusse pannud või end segaselt väljendanud. Aga üldjoontes võin nüüd tõesti anda selle lubaduse välja, et VARSTI-VARSTI!![]() |

Every now and then I remember this glove blog... I see that in 2018 I made my last post and moved the "knitting diary"-like activity to the Facebook page Kristi Jõeste Ula. Times changed - it was inevitable that an easier and faster way was to reflect on activities on social media, no longer in an "old-fashioned" blog. I have also posted better wishes on my personal Instagram account @kristijoeste.

As a one-time update, maybe I will do them again later during the rest of my life, I would like to announce that "Estonian Knitting 4. Gloves" is currently actively on my desk with co-author and editor Anu Pink and it will very likely be published this year (in English later)! I have to admit that the decision to ask Anu to complete the journey of this book series was the best one ever, because I would never have been able to finish it alone! We divided the topics/techniques between us so that she writes the technology part (mostly) and separately about the travelling stitches, lace patterns and single-color gloves, and I am in charge of the inlay-patterned, embroidered, fringed and gloves in stranded colourwork. As of now, I have handed over the drafts to the publisher and Anu is formatting them into the pages which they will look like in the book. Of course, this means active, almost daily dialogue and her inquiries and comments if I have messed up something or expressed myself not too clearly. But in general, I can now really promise that SOON, SOON!
One of the many great works was in 2024, when I was the chief curator of the joint exhibition "The River of Time" of UTVCA alumni masters and lecturers (design and concept by Mae Kivilo, formatting by Marko Aatonen). I had two pairs of gloves on display: Mulgi's super-fine replica mittens ERM 1810 and the cross-stitched mittens "Kuueteistarvilised" inspired by them. We celebrated the department's 30th anniversary with the exhibition. I believe that this traveling exhibition was one of the most dignified in our practice so far, and was also the most expensive we have ever spent on in terms of budget. It was on display at the Rüki Gallery in Viljandi, the Design and Architecture Gallery in Tallinn, and the Vana-Võromaa Cultural Center.
Finally. In recent years, I have found myself performing as a rock musician as a keyboard player in the Fuzzolini band. This journey continues. The world of gloves also continues - not on as large a scale as before, but after the book is published, I may find new inspiration to experiment with a fresher approach in this area as well. Next year I will be 50 years old and I have to be more careful about where I direct my energy and I also have to treat my hands more gently - they don't allow me to knit so often anymore. I do strength training, which also helps strengthen my hand muscles, but it seems that way. Looking back on my mission work as a popularizer of traditional glove knitting - thanks to all my fellow travelers, especially Anu Pink, who has done it even more passionately than I have, I can happily say that this great work has borne sweet fruit! There are now a lot of people in Estonia and around the world who knit Estonian gloves and more! This means that I can soon put my research aside, and I won't have to knit so many copies myself, but I can continue where I started over 20 years ago: as a renewer of the Estonian glove tradition, knitting new gloves more from the position of an artist, designing gloves that don't have direct models, but that are shaped by the vast amount of experience I have acquired. I think I would like to work with embroidered gloves the most, since there are currently no active players in this niche.

Patterns for these gloves were chosen from Paistu parish, also the wrist technique. While knitting the gloves I watched all seven seasons of Game of Thrones tv-series!
Erika labakud

These mittens were made for Erika who is living in North-Sweden. Because of the colder climate we chosed a bit thicker yarns, 6/2 and in natural sheep shades. Pattern is taken from a historical mitten from Kihnu, colours for entrelac cuff I composed by myself.

Ajatuse näitusel
Valisin saadaolevaist peeneima lõnga 12/2, number 1,0 mm vardad ning ornamendi, mis originaalis paikneb ühel üle sajaaastasel Muhu põllel, kuna ma ei leidnud kinnaste pealt sellist, mis mind kõnetaks. Pidin ornamendi kohandama silmuskudumistehnikasse, kuid selle põhiolemus jäi samaks. Oma kahelt poolt samasuguse pisikudumi paigutasin sobivas mõõdus kitarrikeeltele ning lisasin nurkadesse diagonaalselt ka kasutatud vardad. Kokku sündis ajatult minimalistlik ja lihtne kompositsioon püst- ja kaldristist, mida omakorda võimendab keskel paiknev ornament. Üksjagu pusimist oli kitarrikeelte pingutamisega rõngale nii, et ei jääks midagi silma häirivat paistma - üks keel jäi paraku veidi lõdvaks, aga võib-olla on see just tore.
Ühisnäitus 32 eesti meistri töödest on 7. oktoobrini avatud Tallinnas Katariina kirikus. Sealt edasi rändab see Eesti Rahva Muuseumi ja Pärnusse Uue Kunsti Muuseumi.
Here I present my piece at the grand "Timeless" exhibition at Tallinn Katariina Church. The task for the masters was to represent their skills, tehcnique and material instead of the ready-made gloves, which seemed complicated at first but then the idea occured to me that it would be thoughtful to use 1,0 mm needles and 12/2 yarn to knit an abstarct piece. I choosed old ornament from an Muhu apron, first used in the end of the 19th century that I preserve at my home. During installation I used guitar strings which were similar to my needles (I also used those as well).
Beautifully simple, minimalist composition was my aim.
The exhibition will be open until October 7 and then it moves to the Estonian National Museum in Tartu and Museum of Modern art in Pärnu.

Ilusad
See paar on suvise värvidega hullamise tulemus. Avastasin lõpuks ometi täiusliku randmevärvide koosluse, mida lapilises koes kududa ja millega ise väga rahule jäin. Kiri aga on võetud Halliste labakutelt. Tulemuseks said ühed ilusad ja lihtsad sini-valged Eesti kindad. Muud lugu polegi!

Jälle ühed kolga-jaanid. Another pair of Kolga-Jaani.

These men's gloves are inspired by the very old, white-indigo pieces of mittens from Kolga-Jaani (a parish in the southern part of Estonia). I changed ornament a bit and instead of the two-coloured braids used single-coloured. To make the gloves look brighter, I added some beige spots.

This dark indigo blue pair, inspired by the gloves of Saaremaa island, I knitted for my son. Perhaps he will be growing so quickly that the gloves won't fit next season? We'll see.

The last pair of this year I decided to knit of the dark sheep-brown yarn that I had bought from Finland (made by Pirtin Kehräämö OY). Together with madder red it is so beautiful!

Proovisin läbi teha järjekordse silmipaitava traditsioonilise värvikooslusega (s.o sini-valge) kindakirja Hiiumaalt. Algsed labakindad muutusid minu vaimusilma ja Anu käte kaudu sõrmkinnasteks koos naksaka punase ristirea ja keerukorraga. Originaalid asuvad, nagu ikka, ERMis.
This time I tried another very traditional Estonian colour combination - white and indigo - and not so very common pattern from Hiiumaa island. Originally these were mittens but I choosed to add a red cross line and fingers and here they are, brand new gloves!

Nende kinnaste puhul sai kasutatud võrdlemisi lahjat koloriiti, kuigi ka Muhus ei olnud iga viimane kui paar täisvõimsusel värvidega. Konkreetset inspiratsiooni sain ühelt ERMi paarilt. Vähendasin kärbsekirja, muidu oleks see 8/2 lõnga puhul olnud hiiglaslik.
In this pair I used a bit softer color scheme, not very typical to Muhu. The concrete inspiration came from here. I changed the patterns a bit smaller, in order to adapt these to 8/2 yarns, otherwise they would have been too big.

This time I created the Western-Estonian pair in autumn tones and believe me, it is rather challenging to make all these many colours match to one another! Additionally I have worked out my own receipt for knitting the upper part of the gloves so that they would fit anatomically as well.
The stars are knitted like intarsia and are only on one side seen.

Tegemist on üsna originaalitruu kindapaariga - eeskuju ammutasin ERMi kogust. Muutsin ehk pisut värve ja jälgisin, et kogu mustrindus mahuks 8/2 lõngast kootud kindale. Ka töövõtted - loodus, sõrmeotsad jne - olid algupärased.
This pair is quite original-like compared to its forerunner from the Estonian National Museum's collection. Of course there had some tiny adaptions to be made but int the same time I wanted them to be as authentic as I knew about Muhu gloves: cast on, fingertips and so on.

A pair from Western-Estonia, with quite mild colours compared to the typical. As usually I added my own little elements like spots here and there :)

Kukekindad 2015
Maheda värvigammaga Muhu kindad. Randmesse lipsas küll roosa sisse, aga kandmise seisukohast pole sel suuremat tähtsust, kuna jääb peitu. Kukekirja kohandasin-vähendasin 8/2 lõngale.

Väike saamislugu ka. Suurim väljakutse seisnes peenikese lõnga leidmises, ehkki nii peenikest kahekordset nagu vanasti Muhus randmeosade jaoks kasutati, mul ei õnnestunudki leida. Randmepunaseks kasutasin nõukogudeaegset u 12/2 lõnga, mis ei ole minu arust 100% villane, sest ta läigib pisut, ja mida tuli kaks korda värvida, sest esimene kord Laumetsa värvidega andis tulemuseks pesus laiali valgumise - pidin selle lõnga, mida oli õnneks vähe, ca 20 g, suisa ära viskama, sest ei hakanud üle keetma. Teine kord Pilvelammaste pulbriga õnnestus ideaalselt - lõng imas värvi endasse ja vesi jäi selge. Teised värvid olid ühekordsed 8/1 lõngad või topeltvõetud peenvillased tikkimislõngad. Randmekirju tuli kohandada nii, et need mahuksid 128 silmusele. Ka vikleid tuli vähendada, sest 160 silmust/ringil kasutades oleksid kindad tulnud meestemõõtu - nii nagu nad ka muuseumis olid (vt siit). Tuli aga jälgida, et sümmeetria kuhugi ei kaoks, et viklid jaguneksid kenasti igale sõrmele.
Valge lõnga valmistas Liis Luhamaa kodumaisest tallevillast, ise märkis ta numbriks 10,5/2, kuid kududes tundus see ikkagi peenem. Norra 10/2 lõng igatahes on tunduvalt paksem. (Muide, Saara Kirjastusest saab osta nii mainitud norra lõnga - nende veebipoes nime all "Hea lõng", kui ka 12/2 Taanist pärit lõnga - see viimane tegi mulle kõnealuste kinnaste valguses natuke meelehärmi, sest võrreldes käsitsikedratud lõngaga on hind kordades odavam - oleks ma teadnud ja veidi veel oodanud...; teisalt on Liisi lõng eriti pehme ja "õige" tundega.)
Nende kinnaste valmimine on olnud pikk ja võrdlemisi piinarikas protsess. Väsisin vahepeal nii ära, et ei tahtnud kaua aega kätte võtta. Töö venis pikemaks muidugimõista ka näpuharjutuste vajalikkuse tõttu. Nii paljude silmustega pole ma ju harjunud kuduma, seega tuli kliendi käemõõtudele sobilik numbriline ekvivalent alles välja töötada. Avastasin rannet kududes ja hiljem muuseumikindaid uue pilguga kontrollides, et keerukordade ajal peab silmuseid vähem olema, kirja ajal aga rohkem! Ühesuguse silmustearvuga jäänuks keskosa tunduvalt kitsam. Kui lõng on 8/2, siis seda teadmist rakendama ei pea, kuid peenemaga tuli see kohe esile. Ja nii oligi! - kõigil Muhu muuseumikinnastel märkasin seda kavalat kasvatamist-kahandamist. Kahjuks ei ole "Meite Muhu mustrites" antud asjaolu mainitud ja nii kaotasin hulga väärtuslikku aega. (Minu tähelepanek kehtib ka mustriliste sõrmikute asjus, neil on ju samad randmed.)
Sõrmeotsakahandus on spiraalne, arvestasin Muhu reeglipära. Loodus aga pöidla tagant keeramisega. See ei tahtnud hästi välja tulla, kuna must lõng oli ühekordne ja kaunis jäik, vahepeal katkes, sest keerd tuli välja. No jäigi serv siis selline natuke "mumpsuline", tegin, mis ma tegin, mitte midagi ei aidanud kena vitsa tekkimisele kaasa. Ilmselt jäi süüdlaseks va lõng.

These are quite authentic Muhu gloves: the originals are very big and have 160 stitches per round (look here), my gloves have 128, suitable for women's size. So I had to adapt the patterns.
I used homespun yarn made by Liis Luhamaa and in wrists I used Soviet yarn which I dyed chemically into red.
Alltogether it was very long process because I had to make few samples before starting the "real" work. Nobody had ordered such an exclusive pair ever before and therefore I was not sure how many stitches to use with the yarn I had. I went to museum many times and discovered some new technical details. For example there has to be done increases and decreases in the middle part of the wrists. Otherwise they would be too narrow compared to the edge-parts.
